I have often noticed that many bloggers constantly sell stuff to their readers. These people blog solely for the purpose of selling a dream to desperate Internet Marketers (if you can call them that) and as you know selling a dream to someone is not exactly…. difficult.
There are of course genuine people like Jason who runs a Young Entrepreneur blog and Bryan who runs a blog that talks about blog flipping who give away quality information potentially worth thousands for free to their readers. They recommend products based on their personal experience and this is not the type of plugging I have a problem with.
If you have tried something yourself and you like it, then why not help others out by spreading the word? However, once again this is a catch 22. There are others who are subscribed to the lists of almost each and every major “guru” and they aren’t at all hesitant to whip out their credit cards to purchase high-ticket products. The problem with these people is “lack of focus and action”. They blunder on from one method to another and FAIL at EACH and EVERYTHING. They obviously want to make good on their losses and thus start promoting everything they buy hoping that people will buy through their affiliate links and this allows them to recuperate their investment.
What did they gain out of this? NOTHING. That’s right ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.… Except persuading a few other hapless souls into buying a product that made the recommender no money.
So, the next time you think about recommending a product, ask yourself the following questions:
- Have you tried the product yourself? If so, were you successful with it?
- If you haven’t tried the product have you heard positive feedback about it from people you consider trustworthy?

I hate reading reviews when you can obviously tell the blogger has not even tried the product or service. My readers are valuable to me, and I will only recommend things that I have used and like.

I dont think it is bad for people to pitch a good product online. Why not use your blog to make some money. Jason and Brian do make money by giving content away. They just make it through advertising.
Infact Brian is currently selling access to a private site with exclusive information for paying customers.
What do you think about that?

You should always recommend a product based on your experience with it. Or at least tell everybody you haven’t tried it yet, but you’ve heard that…etc. Anyways, I try to stay true and always say the good, the bad and the ugly.

Ryan – I totally agree with you. It’s by no means bad to give away quality stuff and make money at the same time. I’m just speaking out against those hypocrites who recommend every product under the sun for the sole purpose of getting a hefty affiliate commission. If the product’s good and you’ve tried it, then by all means go ahead and recommend it
I am a member of Bryan’s Blog Flipping Blueprint and it’s brilliant. However, Bryan launched this as there was no concrete blog flipping product in the market and the support he provides in the forums is truly phenomenal.

Ya Jason does stand out because he provides articles often that are nothing but solid content and great advice, and that shows respect for readers intelligence, also he’s upfront about where he stands to gain from stuff he’s blogging about, so again, earns trust of the readers rather than just jumping the gun to ply some crappy product.
The problem with most of these douches who buy up but never get anywhere is just pure laziness. They buy the product expecting everything to be done for them without putting in any effort.

I often see bloggers give sparkling reviews of products they have been given for free and have an affiliate scheme, my first question is always – “would you buy this yourself, and would you promote it if there was no affiliate commissions available?”

I can’t deal with blogs that provide constant reviews of products…even if they are all truthful opinions. Its normally the case that you can find a lot of information regarding the ‘paid product’ on similar blogs! They just hope for the quick ‘bang’ of money, and then are gone again…

Ooh, before I never though of it quite that badly. I do know how promoting a bad product can really strike you.
I do support giving a product review on a good product, or a critical one on a bad one. If I do a review, I will not do it “properly,” trying to make people buy it, I will only talk about it, and 99% of my reviews are of free will.

It sure is important to not sell too much to readers, because they will quickly turn around and go against the site for pushing the limits. People are quite watchful of how much material is being provided versus how much attention is being taken. Trying a product before recommending it might get a more positive result.

I think it’s important to build trust before you start selling to your readers. Once your readers know that they can trust your judgement, and that you aren’t just in it for their money… they’ll respect you enough to make a purchase or two based on your recommendations!
